SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA

YRE 003 "Sacramento YRE Walk"

I did the Sacramento walk just as the sun was rising.   The very first part of the walk, coming from the Sandman motel on Jibboom, is a questionable area with heavy traffic.  Since it was early morning and not quite light, it was not an area I was happy to be in.  Fortunately, once the walk reaches the train station it improves drastically.

A downtown residential area was next -- peaceful and lovely with the remnants of Fall leaves.  You basically head directly away from the train station for the first half of the walk and then return on the second half, passing through the Capitol Mall.

The state capitol is enclosed in a large park with various botanical and artwork displays.  You could spend a great deal of time just wandering around the park.  But no, I had a train to catch, so I continued on to the capitol building.  Overall, the capitol complex, while nice, was not as large and grandiose as one might expect for a rich state like California.  It does not compete, for example, with Denver.  But then again, Sacramento is a much smaller city.

After the capitol, the walk route goes through a downtown shopping district with plenty of chances to stop for coffee or lunch.  The prettiest part of the walk is yet to come.  The Old Sacramento district is a historical area that has been renovated, right down to its wooden boardwalks.  The old buildings are now filled with upscale haberdasheries and restaurants.  It's simply charming.

At the end of Old Sacramento is a short trip along the Sacramento River and then back through that not-so-nice part of town to the motel.  This is a well-designed capitol city tour courtesy of the California
Volkssport Association.
