New Year's Eve was blessed with ideal weather -- clear, not too cold, with great visibility. The walk in West Seattle featured a couple of challenging hills to get the blood pumping and a nice long stretch along the West Seattle beach where walkers oohed and aahed over gorgeous views of downtown Seattle offset by a ripe full moon.
Back at the start/finish, the scene was crowded and inviting with ESVA goods for sale, lots of friendly club members, festive decorations and a hearty supper of bratwurst and sauerkraut offered by the women of Tibbet's church. Later that night, the fireworks at the Space Needle were particularly outstanding this year and visible from all over the city. 389 walkers enjoyed the hospitality of Emerald City Wanderers and Tibbet's church New Year's Eve. Our commemorative flag patch sold out that first night. Many walkers commented on how lovely the walk had been.
On New Year's Day, the weather was less cooperative. It rained steadily that morning, but Northwest walkers took it all in stride. We had 395 participants New Year's Day, many pausing at the start/finish to 'carb up' on the breakfast the women of Tibbet's church prepared -- eggs, pancakes and fruit. The walk went through some outstanding residential areas that morning, including a long section of waterfront properties that no doubt influenced many a New Year's resolution!
A warm thanks to the event coordinators Sam Best and Grover Partee and to all the club members who worked hard to make this event memorable. And a special thanks to Tibbet's United Methodist Church.
