Walking the Great Northwest

"Meet & Greet" Fort Lewis walk, Mar 10, 2002

A great walk, a casual Sunday, and a group of friendly people to walk with -- what could be better than that?

Last September, Emerald City Wanderers enjoyed walking with the Vancouver USA group down in Vancouver, Wa.  This March we will have the chance to walk with the Capitol Volkssport Club at the North Fort Lewis YRE.

The North Fort Lewis YRE is a 10K walk and is rated a 2.  The route follows the shoreline of American Lake with trips through Army housing area, a park and a campground.  More details about the walk on the Capitol Volkssport Club website here.  This walk qualifies as a "10 More National Heritage Walk."

Fort Lewis is an active military base south of Tacoma and east of Olympia.  The base has 86,000 acres, including American Lake, campground and recreational facilities.  The base population is over 25,000.

The Capitol Volkssport Club is located in Olympia and puts on many fine events including the Olympia YREs, the YREs in Aberdeen and Ocean Shores, the Heart Healthy walks in February and the Capitol Lights event at Christmas time.

One of the benefits of doing North Fort Lewis as a group is that, because of our current state of military readiness, military ID is required to get onto base.  Going as a group we will all be able to get on base thanks to a few important 'card-carrying' members of both clubs.

The group will assemble at 9:00 at the Sea-Tac mall in the parking lot at the east end of Mervyns (near Tony Roma's).  From there we will be able to shuffle folks around into cars with military decals.  We will meet the Capitol Volkssport folks at the walk start at 9:30.  After the walk, we'll enjoy lunch together before heading back home.

Please RSVP to Jane so we can make lunch reservations.
