The ESVA's Northwest Trek walk this year was held February 2-3. Saturday was a beautiful, sunny day and Sunday had some light drizzle with sun breaks.
This park near Mount Rainier is a ideal volkssport event location. There are miles of maintained trail wandering through beautiful woods. In addition, there's the animal park itself to explore -- a collection of wildlife in a natural setting.
The first 5K of the walk explored the woods. There were several scenic highlights, including a vantage point that overlooked a lake. After returning to the pavilion for a checkpoint, the second half of the walk visited the animal park exhibits. Lynx, bobcats, cougars, wolves and bears were along the route, providing an opportunity to stop and be fascinated.
The end of the walk once more dipped into the woodlands before returning to the pavilion for the finish.
This was one of the nicest walks I've ever attended in the Northwest. The paths through the woods were outstanding and being able to view the animals added entertainment and variety. The checkpoints were all manned and well stocked.
The park also gave volkswalkers a discount on the tram ride so they could explore the rest of the park in comfort.
Thanks very much to ESVA and all the club volunteers who made this walk a prime event.
