Walking the Great Northwest

Club Newsletter, 1st Qtr 2002

On the Trail in the Northwest:
Orting YR920:  Foothills Trail -- pg 1

The Orting YRE is entirely out-and-back on a terrific rails-to-trails, the Foothills Trail (the Foothills of what, you ask?  Why, Mt. Rainier.)

The walk registration occurs in the little town of Orting (approx 45 minutes southeast of Seattle) at a Texaco.  From there you can walk the short distance to the walk start or drive.  There's a nice parking lot for users of the Foothills Trail at the walk start, so driving to it is recommended.

Right: If you're lucky and it's a clear day, you'll get a breathtaking shot of Mt. Rainier.  The close-up was taken with my zoom lens.

Read about the Foothills Trail

The walk passes a little city park and a cow ranch before heading into the woods.  Much of the Foothills Trail walks alongside a gorgeous river with breathtaking scenic points and little foot bridges to cross.  There are a couple of nice places to stop and get some 'bench time' along the river if you care to indulge.  . . .
