Walking the Great Northwest

Club Newsletter, 1st Qtr 2002

On the Trail in the Northwest:
Lacey: Chehalis Western Trail
YRE 955

This Lacey YRE walks on the Chehalis Western Trail, a rails-to-trails conversion.  It's 'brother' (or 'sister') YRE is Olympia YR1743, which walks on a more southwestern portion of the CWT.

The Lacey section of the Chehalis Western Trail has a different feeling from the Olympia walk.  The Lacey walk starts in Panorama City, an enormous, and well-designed, retirement community.  You walk through a couple of residential streets before hitting the CWT.

This walk is primarily an out-and-back walk.  During the first couple of kilometers the CWT goes through a more urban area than the Olympia walk.  The CWT parallels some back yards for a short time and hits a number of cross-walks.  But before long the Trail heads into a rural, and then woodsy, area.

At this point, there's some delightful scenery to enjoy.  I particularly liked 'fern alley' (see my pictures) and the lovely bridge/overpass at the turn-around point.  If you enjoy walking rails-to-trails, the Lacey and Olympia walks are both great walks, and they make nice companion walks for those who like to do two 10Ks at a time.  The start points are only about a ten minute drive from one another.

Flat, easy, and scenic, this is another winning YRE from the Capitol Volkssport Club.
