Walking the Great Northwest

On the Trail in the Northwest:
Preston:  Preston-Snoqualmie Trail
YRE 360 -- pg 1

Preston is a small town between Issaquah and North Bend, about a half-hour drive from Seattle.  It appears to have escaped detection and has very much retained a small, in-the-middle-of-the-woods feel.

Like North Bend, Preston has the Northwest logging town flavor of Twin Peaks.  Maybe it's the enormous pines or the views of mountains in all directions.

Tucked away in all those woods is a rails-to-trails conversion, a small one that could easily be dismissed in favor of the much longer and better-know John Wayne Trail nearby.  But the Preston-Snoqualmie Trail has its own unique charm.

The day I did this walk it was a rare Seattle snow day, and the town and Trail were particularly woodsy and picture-book perfect under a dusting of snow.  The walk begins at a Chevron just across the street from the Preston-Snoqualmie Trail.  The walk follows the PST for a short while and then takes some detours into town.

The first detour leads you through a couple of residential streets -- streets loaded with towering pines and a definite small-mountain-town feel -- to the Preston cemetery.  The cemetery is small, and has odd square cements 'trays' for the graves.  There were a group of local children sledding on a small hill in the graveyard, unintimidated by the spooky surroundings.
